Early history
Lodge St George No. 549 was constituted under a Warrant dated 3 February 1848 issued by the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE), with RW Bro. Collin Lawford Ackland, a solicitor and Justice of the Peace, as its first Master.
St George is a Hall Stone Lodge, a Centenary Lodge, and the primus UGLE Lodge of Freemasons in the District of Bombay. The Lodge in fact predates the District Grand Lodge by more than a decade, for it was St George that had petitioned UGLE for the creation of what was then called the Provincial Grand Lodge of Bombay.
Consequently, on 16 July 1861, W Bro. George Taylor (the then Master of St George) was installed as the first Provincial Grand Master of Bombay.
Distinguished members
In the years since RW Bro. Taylor’s preferment, the high office of what is now called the District Grand Master has been occupied by no less than 16 members of St George:
Additionally, RW Bro. Michael Timothy Holland, who is a subscribing member of St George, is the Provincial Grand Master of Herefordshire since 2019.
Two of the aforesaid notable members of St George went on to occupy the highest office in Freemasonry, that of the Grand Master of UGLE:
Including MW Bro. HRH Prince Arthur, the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, three members of Lodge St George further distinguished themselves by serving as Viceroys and Governors-General:
Six of St George’s brethren also served as Governors of Bombay Presidency (which, at its greatest extent, comprised the present-day state of Gujarat, the western two-thirds of Maharashtra state, north-western parts of Karnataka state, Pakistan’s Sindh Province, and Aden in Yemen):
Celebrating the past, embracing the future
St George continues to be a thriving, vibrant Lodge that is steeped in tradition and yet has a modern outlook. It is known for its high standards of ritual working (which visitors routinely appreciate) and for being a friendly Lodge with a nurturing approach, especially towards its younger members. The senior brethren constantly strive to ensure a culture of inclusiveness by involving all members in the life of the Lodge. The members in turn contribute through formal as well as informal means, thus increasing their sense of belonging, interest and commitment.
Lodge St George meets at Freemasons’ Hall, Mumbai on the third Tuesday of every month other than May and October. All meetings are followed by a formal banquet known as the Festive Board.
