DISTRICT GRAND MASTER FOR BOMBAY AND NORTHERN INDIA 2002-2009

On 12th April 2002, Rt. WBro. Gilbert retired as the District Grand Master. WBro. Dorab Bajan was made Deputy District Grand Master in charge. On 12th June 2002, WBro. Dorab Bajan was appointed as District Grand Master.

On 5th August 2002, the five Lodges in Central India, namely Alexandra No. 1065, Jabalpur, Corinth No. 1122, Nagpur, Excelsior In Khandesh No. 2377, Bhusaval, Heart of India No. 3760, Bilaspur and Penchvale No. 7643, Nagpur held a grand function to bid farewell to Rt. WBro. Gilbert and to welcome the District Grand Master Designate WBro. Bajan.

Rt. WBro. Bajan has been the first DGM who was residing outside of Mumbai.

Brethren who were members of a Lodge or Lodges under the Grand Lodge of India were given the liberty by the Grand Lodge of England of rejoining those Lodges within a period of 12 months.

On 13th January 2003, the DGM along with his officers travelled to Nagpur to attend the Annual Meeting of the Regional Grand Lodge of Western India for the installation of Rt. WBro. Govind Lal Sahu as Regional Grand Master.

In March 2003, MWBro. Dilip Dwarkadas Udeshi, MW The Grand Master of The Grand Lodge of India, attended the Annual Communication of the District, at the invitation of the Grand Lodge of England. This was the first time that a Grand Master of The Grand Lodge of India had ever visited a District Grand Communication of our constitution in India.

Continuing in the line of his predecessors, Rt. WBro. Bajan permitted Lodge Excelsior in Khandesh No. 1738 to host the Half Yearly Communication in Bhusawal. This was preceded by the125th Anniversary of the Lodge on the previous evening. On the morning of the Communication, Lodge Universal Brotherhood No. 3835, to commemorate its 80th Anniversary, organised a seminar on “Freemasonry, Challenges ahead”. This was the first time that a seminar had been held. Sticker stamps had been printed and sold for the purpose of augmenting the funds for Bombay Masonic Association.

In November 2003, Rt. WBro. David Kennith Williamson, Rt. W. The Assistant Grand Master accompanies by WBro. Robert Morrow, The Grand Secretary came on a friendly visit to the District. A dinner was held with ladies being present along with dignitaries from other Constitutions. The Assistant Grand Master released the first issue of “The Mason”, a quarterly magazine of the District.

A trip to Bollywood was also arranged, where the visitors witnessed the outdoor shooting of the film “Main Hoon Na” and they had a very friendly and cordial chat with the actor Shahrukh Khan.

To make the 2004 Annual Communication more attractive, the DGM decided to hold a Charity Festival after the communication, where ladies and guests were also invited. Lapel pins had been made for the occasion, which were sold and the proceeds went to the Bombay Masonic Association. A raffle with many attractive prizes was also held and those proceeds were also given to charity.

Lodge Justice & Peace No. 5442 which was having some problem due to low membership, was relocated to Sholapur. A few brethren from Mumbai & Pune joined this Lodge and with a few local brethren, the Lodge was again restored to its former glory.

Also, the Haig Brown Lodge No. 3829 was relocated to Goa, where many local persons were Initiated and this Lodge is working very well.

The same year Lodge Kitchener No. 2998 held its Centenary meeting in October. To coincide with this, The Half Yearly Communication was also held at New Delhi. The then present Earl Kitchener, PGSD also travelled to India for the same. He also travelled with the DGM and his officers to Amritsar and Jalandhar where local Lodges held their meetings.

A Charity Festival was held again after the Annual Communication of 2005. This time, lapel pins along with District ties and T-Shirts were made and sold for the cause of charity.

At this Communication, the DGM announced setting up of “Visiting Brethren”, where a brother was appointed as a visitor to the particular Lodge to help them in any problems that they may be having.

WBro. Col. Bawa Gurvachan Singh and WBro. Percy JF Driver were appointed as Assistant DGM in place of WBro. Jai Ratan Bhalla and Sam Levi.

The next day, a Prestonian Lecture was delivered by WBro. Gordon Davies, PGSD and the subject was “Women and Freemasonry”. The lecture was well attended by Brethren, ladies and guests.

A sum of Rs. 1,50,000 was donated to The District Grand Lodge of Madras for the Tsunami relief. This District Grand Master gave this full amount to ‘SRFI – Schizophrenia Research Foundation (India)’. This is an institution which deals with children who suffer from trauma, aftereffects and psychological social consequences of Tsunami, particularly on children in the affected coastal villages. The DGM of Madras, had its recorded as ‘Funded by The English Freemasons of Bombay & Norther India’.

A sum of Rs. 50,000 was donated to The Indian Red Cross for those affected by the floods in Mumbai.

The Half Yearly Communication of 2005 was held in Jabalpur to coincide with the 140th Anniversary celebrations of The Alexandra Lodge No. 1065.

The new District Directory and Year Book was released at the meeting.

Brethren who completed 25/40/50 years in Masonry were honoured with the presentation of a lapel pin and a certificate.

On 18th February 2006, an Ambulance was presented to The Cancer Patients Aid Society at Mumbai.

After the Annual Communication of 2006, another Charity Festival was held. This time it was jointly sponsored by The Cyrus Lodge No. 1359 and The Silvery Dawn Lodge No. 7700. An amount of Rs. 1,00,000 was presented by these two Lodges to the Bombay District E.C. Grand Charity.

The Half Yearly Communication was held in Pune, which was hosted by The Leslie Wilson Lodge No. 4880. A special feature of this meeting was that it was attended by the District Grand Masters of Madras and Bengal as well as the Provincial Grand Master of Ireland in India, The District Grand Master of India, Scottish Constitution, The Regional Grand Master of Northern India and The Regional Grand Master of Western India. This was the first time that six visiting dignitaries attended any of the District’s meetings.

The Research Lodge No. 3184 held a meeting to celebrate the centenary of the Lodge. This was followed by a Ladies night. Later in the year, the Lodge arranged a Prestonian Lecture titled ‘The Grand Secretary (1813-1980)’. The lecture was delivered by Rt. WBro. Rointon Khambatta, Past District Grand Master of Pakistan.

The Annual Communication 2007 was held in New Delhi. This was the first time that the District’s Annual Communication was held outside of Mumbai.

WBro. Percy Driver was appointed as Deputy DGM and WBros. Vishwanathan Nagarajan and Stephen Hindes were appointed as Assistant DGMs. At this meeting. WBro. Paul Hurst, who had come all the way from England, gave a talk on ‘The New Masonic Samaritan Fund’. It also included spheres of medical help to Masons. The same evening, an Ambulance was presented to ‘The General Williams Masonic Poly Clinic’ which was being run by the Grand Lodge of India. The Lt. Governor of Delhi was the Chief Guest for the presentation.

In July 2007, the DGM accompanies by several officers travelled to Colombo for the installation of the District Grand Master of Sri Lanka.

The Half Yearly Communication was held in Jalandhar on 27th October 2007. MW Bro. Justice Devendra Gupta, the MW The Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of India accompanies by Rt. WBro. S. Krishna, Grand Secretary and Regional Grand Master also attended.

A programme, ‘Meet The District Grand Master’ was held in Mumbai.

In November 2007, MW Bro. The Hon. Marquess of Northampton, MW The Pro Grand Master and Lady Northampton, paid a friendly visit to the District. They were accompanies by VWBro. Nigel Brown, the Grand Secretary and his wife. A dinner was held at The Yacht Club. The next day, they went on a tour of Mumbai and also visited The Cama Library.

In 2008, The District Grand Lodge of Northern India got back its original status. WBro. Vishwanathan Nagarajan was installed as The District Grand Master by Rt. WBro. David Williamson, Rt. W. The Assistant Grand Master on 12th January in New Delhi.

This brought back the number of Lodges in the District from 28 to 23.

In October, Lodge Burnett No. 3284 Khadki celebrated its centenary in a grand manner. The next day, District Half Yearly Communication was held.

In December 2008, the DGM accompanied, by a few brethren travelled to Singapore to attend the 150th Anniversary of The District Grand Lodge of Eastern Archipelago. On this occasion, the Grand Secretary also held a meeting with the District Grand Masters of Asia and New Zealand to discuss various points involving The Grand Lodge and the Districts.

In 2009, The Penchvale Lodge o. 7643 began its 50th Anniversary celebrations by holding a special meeting in January. It also organised a blood donation camp, where the wife of the Worshipful Master of the Lodge was the first donor.
The next day, the Annual Communication was held. The DGM, announced the two new offices of District Grand Mentor and District Grand Orator.
On both these days, the meetings were followed by ethnic dinners. On the first day, it was a depiction of the Sherwood Forest. The next evening it was a typical Punjabi village set up. The DGM and some brethren arrived at the venue on a tractor attired in Punjabi head-dress.

The Half Yearly Communication for 2009 was held in Goa. It was a very well attended meeting. WBro. Chris Caines, President of The Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution also attended and gave a very informative talk on Dementia and The Old Age Home being run by the Grand Lodge.

On 1st November, Rt. WBro. Dorab Bajan retired as the District Grand Master and WBro. Percy Driver, became Deputy DGM in Charge.
