DISTRICT GRAND MASTER 1914-1928

Rt.WBro. Bro His Excellency Sir Leslie Wilson was installed as District Grand Master in March 1924.

WBro. W.D. Tommey Wilson had the unique pleasure of installing his own father in the chair of Lodge Light of the Craft No. 3265, Jabalpur.

In September, he presided over a Communication of the DGL held in Poona, the first time for many years that the DGL held its Communication away from its headquarters.

In December 1924, the DGL met at Karachi – the first occasion in 23 years when DGL met in Sindh. The DGM presided.

Lodge Holland No. 3554, Bharatpur went into abeyance owing to paucity of members.

Another special Communication of the DGL was held in December 1925 at Karachi, Rt.Bro. H.E. Sir Leslie Wilson presiding. At the end of this meeting, a festival was held, with the object of collecting donations for “Cherry Orphan Scholarship Fund” to be administered by the Bombay Masonic Association for the education of the posthumous son of a deceased Brother of Lodge Union No. 767, Karachi. Donations amounting to Rs. 1,850 were received.

Rt.WBro. Sir Leslie Wilson stressed the importance of special meetings held outside of Bombay city such as Poona and Karachi, where the meetings were well attended and appreciated.

The March 1926 Communication was held at Poona, with the DGM in the chair. Plans were drawn up for the Grand Lodge delegation (see year 1927) to visit as many Masonic centres as possible and arrangements were made for a festival and DGL meeting in their honour.

Two more Lodges, namely, Concord and Trust qualified as Hall Stone Lodges. St. George, St. Andrews and Gymkhana having already acquired the distinction.

The first Masonic Calendar of the District was issued this year.

A special Communication of the DGL was held on 6th November 1926 at Nagpur under the banner of Lodge Corinth No. 1122. WBro. Sir Reginald Spence presided. The Diamond Jubilee of the Lodge was celebrated. Another Special Communication was held a week later at Karachi, the DGM presided. The object of this gathering was to assist hospitals in Sind and kindred institutions.

The year 1927 was remarkable for the visit to India of a deputation from the Grand Lodge of England, led by Lord Cornwallis, the Deputy Grand Master. It touched Aden on 13th November and was received by a deputation from Lodge Light of Arabia. An address of welcome, on behalf of the Masonic District of Bombay from the DGL was read by the Worshipful Master of the Lodge. The deputation aid a visit to the Masonic Hall at Maala.

The visitors arrived in Mumbai on 18th November and attended a special meeting of the DGL on the following day at the Town Hall. Rt.WBro. H.E. Sir Leslie Wilson presided. Nearly 500 Brethren attended the meeting. The DGM stated that the DGL came into existence in 1764 and the first DGM was Bro. James Todd. There was however, an interregnum between 1764 and 1861, in which latter year Bro. George Taylor was appointed as DGM by patent from the Grand Master.

Lord Cornwallis thanked the seven Lodges which had donated to the Masonic Peace Memorial Building – St. Andrew’s, St. George, Concord, Truth, Corinth, Gymkhana and Knight.

On the 20th, the deputation attended Divine Service at St. Thomas’ Cathedral. The sermon was preached by the Asst. District Grand Chaplain, the Rev. L Dart.

On the next day, the visitors were present at a meeting of Lodge Eastern Star where an Indian Brother was Initiated.

On 22nd, Sir Reginald Spence was installed as Grand Superintendent by the 2nd Grand Principal, assisted by members of the deputation.

On the 23rd, the deputation visited Poona to attend meetings of Lodges Burnett, Orion in the West, Ubique in the East and Leslie Wilson (which had been founded but a few days previously).

They returned to Bombay on the next day to attend a meeting of Lodge St. George at which an English Brother was Raised.

The deputation then left for Karachi where they attended a joint meeting of Lodges Union, Industry, Sukkur, Faith, Khan Bahadur B. Rajkotwala, Scinde and Indus.

On 16th December, the visitors attended a meeting of Lodge Friendshipf of Ajmere, at which Lodges Central India, Rajputana, Jusice and Malwa were strongly represented.

A few days later, on the 21st, they attended a meeting of Lodge Light of the Craft at Jubbulpore, where the following Lodges were also represented: Alexandra, Corinth, Berar and St. Andrew’s.

Among other activities in 1927, there was one addition to the roll of Lodges in the District and one exit. Lodge Leslie Wilson No. 4880 was consecrated in Poona on 3rd November by the DGM.

About a month later, Lodge Holland No. 3554 of Bharatpur was erased from the roll of the Grand Lodge.

Two Masonic Temples were dedicated in the District, the temples of Lodge Heart of India at Bilaspur and Lodge Justice at Abu Road.

In January 2918, Sir Reginald Spence, Deputy DGM represented the District at the bicentenary of District Grand Lodge of Bengal.

On 19th November 1928, Lodge Cornwallis was consecrated in Bombay by the DGM.

The total number of Lodges now was 48.
