RT. WBRO. SIR LAWRENCE JENKINS

DISTRICT GRAND MASTER 1904-1908

WBro. Sir Lawrence Jenkins, Chief Justice of Bombay was installed as The District Grand Master by WBro. G.O.W Dunn, Deputy District Grand Master at a Special Communication in January 1904 .

After his Installation Rt.WBro. Sir Lawrence referred to the degrees in Freemasonry and said: “I have not been able altogether to disabuse myself of the reproach that perhaps I’ve wandered of recent years into other branches of Masonry and the Craft and have perhaps followed developments there more than in Craft Masonry. But everybody, whatever particular branch of Masonry he may affect himself, always realises that it is in the Craft that we learn the grammar of Masonry and it is there that we learn the truest principles and find the substratum of real Masonic virtues – virtues which should colour our lives. We profess here to be guided by the purest principles of piety and virtue. Sometimes I put myself the question and I suppose most of you do how far do we act up to those principles we profess and how far are our hearts characterised by that charity which should be a distinguishing feature?
It is undoubtedly a pleasing feature of our Masonic gatherings that we should always go from labour to refreshment and that we should assemble around the festive board. But I always feel that that side of mission should be subordinated to the principles by which we ought to be guided. We should as Masons be aware that we do not allow charity to be subordinated to the festive board. I think it would be a good thing for Masons if we are wedded into a real genuine Brotherhood in stand by our Brother and think no ill of our Brethren.”
